Artist Statement

In my work, I usually link reverse glass painting techniques to screens of digital devices through which we currently perceive our reality.

After experimenting with different printing techniques, I developed two parallel groups of work: paintings on glass and paintings on e-waste (phone displays and computer screens). This material arrangement requires a reversal of the conventional painting procedure; the first layer of paint is seen at the forefront, while the final layer of paint resides in the background. First, I paint the details and then the background. The works are also mirrored.

I use glass as an instrument for observation: I paint what I see through it. This creates non-common distortions created by the anatomic structure of the human eye, which is concave,  like the curvilinear perspective, where the edges of the painting are curved. Putting our imperfect vision in the centre of my practice represents a humanistic gesture in a once more automated world.

Within the European iconographic tradition, reverse glass painting is above all a sacred matter. In contrast to that, I paint from a very human perspective abandoned industries and villages both in Germany (Berlin, Brandenburg, Chemnitz) and Spain (Madrid, Navarra), disappearing landscapes and exhausted bodies.

The mirror, which was also thematized by Velázquez or Clara Peeters, extends to the whole surface of the painting. The spectator, while observing the paintings, will be confronted with his very own reflection on the  glass. In that way,  the observer and the observed object melt into one.

My paintings on e-waste rehabilitate broken smartphone displays and computer screens that come from repair shops. Mobile phones accumulate materials and rare soils from all over the world, coming along with processes that are damaging to our environment. The handcrafted paintings oppose the electronic working of the phones. Every display is provided with the exact coordinate of where it was painted.
